How Long Should Interview Answers Be?
Answer length is one of the most overlooked aspects of interview preparation. Too short and you seem unprepared; too long and you lose the interviewer's attention. The ideal length depends on the type of question being asked.
The 60-90 Second Rule
For most interview questions, aim for 60-90 seconds. This is long enough to give a thorough, structured answer but short enough to keep the interviewer engaged. The exceptions are "Tell me about yourself" (60-90s), quick factual questions (15-30s), and complex technical discussions (which may go longer).
Signs Your Answers Are Too Long
- The interviewer starts looking at their notes or clock
- You're repeating points you already made
- You've gone past 2 minutes on a single answer
- You've lost track of the original question
Signs Your Answers Are Too Short
- The interviewer asks follow-up questions to get more detail
- Your answer is under 20 seconds
- You haven't provided any specific examples
- You answered with just "yes" or "no"
